A Multifaceted Treatment for Chronic Diseases
Do you suffer from a chronic disease that is difficult to treat? Are you battling asthma, allergic rhinitis, diabetes, obesity, eczema, or erectile dysfunction (ED)? Do you want to help strengthen your immune system? If so, a renewed interest in an older drug, amlexanox, might provide the solutions you’re looking for.
Rediscovering Amlexanox
Discovering new uses for older drugs is not all that unusual. For example, Sildenafil(Viagra), originally used to treat angina, is now used for erectile dysfunction. Minoxidil (Rogaine), a drug that promotes hair growth, was initially developed as a blood pressure medication. Amlexanox is another old drug that is gaining renewed attention for its wide range of potential applications.
Initially developed in the 1980s, amlexanox was first marketed to treat canker sores. This drug functions as an anti-inflammatory, anti-allergic, and immune-balancing agent, making it a promising option for treating various challenging conditions. Its potential applications range from managing metabolic diseases and stabilizing mast cells to modulating the immune system and correcting gene expression.
What Is Compounded Amlexanox?
Previously branded as Apthasol® oral paste, amlexanox was used topically to treat recurrent cancer sores. In countries like Japan, it has found success in treating asthma, allergic rhinitis, and conjunctivitis. Moreover, it has shown clinical effectiveness in treating atopic conditions such as eczema. Most importantly, amlexanox plays a critical role in balancing the immune system and improving hard-to-treat inflammatory conditions.
Although amlexanox is no longer available in the U.S. as a commercial product, it is now available as a compounded medication. Peninsula Compounding Pharmacy formulates this novel and versatile drug into oral capsules, taken daily to treat various health challenges.
How Amlexanox Works
Amlexanox’s primary function includes inhibiting the synthesis of inflammatory cytokines like interleukin-6 (IL-6) and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α). Additionally, it also blocks the action of histamine and leukotrienes, thereby reducing allergic reactions and inflammation. Recent studies have unearthed more about how amlexanox works, showing that it inhibits two specific enzymes called IκB kinase ε (IKKε) and TANK-binding kinase 1 (TBK1). These enzymes are involved in metabolic regulation and inflammation, making amlexanox a prospective treatment for metabolic disorders.\
Benefits and Uses of Amlexanox
Amlexanox’s uses range across a broad spectrum of conditions, highlighting its multifaceted potential:
Obesity, Diabetes, and Metabolic Disorders:
Stimulates fat burning, reduces insulin resistance, stimulates the mitochondria, and decreases inflammation.
Erectile Dysfunction:
Promotes maintenance of erections due to PDE-5 inhibition, the target of Viagra and related drugs.
Long-haul Syndrome:
Reduces brain fog, improves oxygen delivery to the lungs, decreases histamine release, and associated inflammation.
Longevity:
Reduces inflammation, promotes autophagy (normal cellular cleanup) via the mTOR pathway, an important regulator of metabolism.
Asthma and Allergies:
Inhibits histamine release from mast cells, reduces allergic responses, decreases inflammation, and promotes relaxation and opening of the airways
Cardiovascular Disease:
Reduces blood pressure, improves circulation, and lowers cholesterol.
Neurodegeneration:
Decreases inflammation and oxidative stress in the brain.
Mast Cell Stabilizer: Reduces release of histamine and inflammatory mediators in mast cells, neutrophils, and monocytes.
Psoriasis and Other Autoimmune Diseases:
Reduces inflammation, modulates macrophages, and balances Th1 and Th2 cells, involved in autoimmunity.
Non-alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD) and Liver Cirrhosis:
Activates AMPK and reduces inflammation.
Genetic Diseases:
May correct gene expression in cystic fibrosis and Duchenne muscular dystrophy.
